Robert Bringhurst: A History of Typography

In 2017, I had the honour and pleasure to connect with Robert Bringhurst, a typographer, poet and linguist, whose work I deeply admire. His piece A History of Typography was originally published as a spread in The Walrus magazine, and I led its re-publishing as an art print.

We together created this print as a fundraiser for the Graphic Designers of Canada Foundation (now known as DesCan Foundation), which empowers design research and education, as well as benevolent support within the design community.

Robert generously donated the artwork. I volunteered as the publisher — leading the project, the pre-press with a new colour and emboss design, and distribution. The printing was sponsored by Hemlock Printers, onto acid-free cover stock sponsored by Spicers Paper. That year, many copies were gifted within the design community in Victoria and at the World Design Congress in Montréal, and other copies helped the Foundation continue its fundraising, as it reached $75,000.

The print is available to view within the University of Victoria Special Collections.
